I am intending on stocking my 180 gallon tank as follows:
6x Geophagus abalios
2x Silver saum
2x Blue acara
2x Oscar
2x Firemouth
2x Platinum HRP
2x Convict
2x plecs
Maybe a BGK and a few large angels - what does everyone think?
Sounds like it'd be worth trying. Dont know anything about Geo's but everything else looks like it should be okay. Just be careful in getting all males for the HRP's and con's if you don't want any babies.
That stock is awfully high plus there are compatibility issues. The geos will go well with angels and probably the blue acaras but not with the rest of the list. The blue acara and silver saum are very similar and most wind up with high conspecific aggression when keeping the two together. HRP and Convicts shouldn't be kept together unless all males do to hybridization. I would chose between the oscars and the silver saums and go with the firemouths and hrp.
so if i removed the convicts, and the BA's, does that seem okay?
i already have the convicts, and now have a breeding pair. i can easily remove them though, i have a few spare tanks.
i want to keep the oscars, as i have two very colourful juveniles i would like to see grow.
So...
6x G. alabios
2x Oscars
2x Platinum HRP's
2x Silver Saums
2x Firemouths
2x Plecs
A BGK
A few Angels
The tank will be planted and mainly consist of bogwood pieces
No. You are mixing aggressive fish with not so aggressive fish. The Geos, Angels, BGK can all go together. But Oscars and Saums would destroy them when they got bigger. Either choose aggressive or non-aggressive and I can give you some options.
The geos and angels wont work, way to peaceful. Since you're set on the oscars I wouldn't do the silver saums, that's a lot of big fish for that tank. I don't really know much about the bgk.
How would you feel about this:
2x Oscars
2x Platinum HRP's
2x Silver Saums
4x Firemouths
2x Plecs
1x BGK
I think this could work if you get them as juvies with a larger BGK. Or you can stay with 2 FM's and get 4 clown loaches. it's really a trial and error with any community tank with cichlids so you should be prepared to remove any overly agressive or weak and picked on fish if needed. Each cichlid will have different personalities, I had 2 of the most peaceful Gold Saums and hell raising Angels. ( not together of course). You could add some dithers as well like bosemani rainbowfish for example.
