A friend of mine gave me his 1800 gallon fish tank the dimensions are 20 feet
x 4 feet x 3 feet. I'm thinking about putting a small Requiem shark in it. Could anybody tell me where I could find one that is legal in the US?

good luck, there won't be many if any that you can find for that.
please explain:confused:

Cappuccino, its a great size tank, however the dimensions aren't ideal. The height is fine, length is fine, but the width is a little small. Only "active" shark I can recommend to you is an Atlantic Smoothhound possible still the width may hinder this. As for where to get sharks, go to www.sharkraycentral.com and PM Greg (Sharkdealer) and let him know what you would like, or any questions you may have.

As was already said. While being a very cool tank its pretty useless for reqium sharks.
Brenden- dont smoothhounds still get over 4'? Not something that should go in a 3' wide tank i would of thought.

Chrisdef15 - The tank is 4' wide, correct Atlantic Smoothhounds do get to about 4' maximum length. However it could spend most of its life in the proposed tank, an alternative would be a Brown Smoothhound, however then he would need to invest into a larger chiller and it would limit his other stocking lists. Maybe it would be best if you stuck with say some Brown Banded Bamboos or Eppauletts?

Actually - Yea the Length & height of the tank are fine.

But at 4 feet in wide - their aren't many active sharks that can be recommended for this tank.

Certainly - No requiem shark could be kept in this tank for it's entire life. The minimum tank width for small(adult size: 3-4') requiems like the Atlantic Sharpnose or Bonnetheads is at least 10 ft wide.

Even the Smoothhounds need at least a tank that's at least 6' wide for their life time.

Best recommendation of sharks suited for this tank - stick with the benthic "aquaria friendly" species - Horns, Bamboos, Eppies, and Coral cats.

Truthfully I think this tank would make for a great predator tank.

With possible a couple of benthic sharks, maybe a ray like a Cortez, or Bulls-eye. With possible a Zebra or Snowflake eel.

Or even a nice Elasmo Tank - forget the Eel.

The point is this tank could easily be an incredible show tank - even without an active swimming shark like a smoothhound or requiem. I've heard of too many people getting large tanks like this and attempt to keep a shark that not suited for it, only to have to give the shark away in a few years.

Also of note - most Aquaria Friendly" Benthic species if taken excellent care of can out live the average Requiem shark, in some cases by about 10 yrs.
