Hi I´m about to get a new tank for my silver aro and polys and I was thinking of going bare bottom, just some lage rocks and wood decor, do you guys think this woud be fine?

It will work ok but depends on personal preference. Some people like the look or like the ease of maintenance. I think it looks unnatural and stressful to the fish. But to each his own. Either way post pics when done.

I think it is just easier to clean up. I dont think it would be stressful for the fish though....that just doesnt make sense.

I wouldn't use Lg. rocks unless they were imitation (plastic) might break the bottom, but driftwood should be fine.
If you go bare bottom, think about painting the out side bottom of your tank, it makes all the difference.

If your natural habitat had a nice soft bed to lay on and dig around in but you were forced to live on a hard, reflective surface that offered no chance to root around in, I think you might be stressed. But that could just be me. And lets not degenerate into the whole fish don't live in a glass box so it's unnatural anyway discussion. OP asked for opinions and I gave mine. I'm entitled to my opinions just as you are. I just think mine are better.:grinno:

bare bottom is just fine.. just paint the bottom and the back side of the tank for added effect.. paint is just one option.. you could use cloth or cartolina or sticker.. depends on your imagination and budget.. lol.. and i personally dont think aros will be stressed when the tank is bare.. just my opinion.. no flaming please! we dont want this thread to be deleted..

i had my silvers in a 55g and always had it bare bottom. cleaning was really easy as stated above. Don't know if this is true, but i've heard that a reflective bare bottom can cause the aro to get droop eyes. Like i said, i don't know if it's true, but my aros did develop droop eyes, but i don't know if it was because of the bare bottom. i still keep my jar in the 55g and keep it bare but i put marine sand on the bottom of my 150g. either way, it's your choice. good luck on your new tank

I was at one of my regular LFS today and I noticed that this one tank was a bare bottom but they put florescent lights (sorry I don't know my lighting yet) on the sides of the bottom outside and the aros looked like they had blue bellies lol. Funny idea, doubt I'd try it.
