Community? Like, are you talking about cichlids and tetras with some corys That kind of deal?
Yeah, not tied to everybody has to be from the same stretch of river, but they will eat and live in the same tank kind of thing.
You can go a lot of ways with that kind of tank. What kind of fish do you like? We can all tell you what we like but it matters what you want.
Best to pick fish that will do good in your water source that you will be doing your water changes with. Be it city water or well.
Do you know your basice as in PH and Hardness.
It says your in Maryland, all city water sources have to by law publish a yearly water quality report and these typically have this information.
If soft, low PH water then pick fish from the East side of South America
If hard, high PH then go with fish from Central America or fish from the west side of South American
