I have a friend who has a 60 gallon plastic tank and he ordered 12 RBPs and they sent him 19. he has a 20 gallon wet dry and a magnum 350 canister filter. only the wet dry is hooked up. if he runs the marineland magnum 350 with the wet dry will they live??? i told him he at least needs to buy the FX5 to run with the wet dry.
Also antbody selling a 215 0r better tank for a good price ???????????
thanks

i only have 6 red bellies in my 55 with a canister filter so i would have to say when they get bigger he will have a lot of death. if they are small he should be ok but dont over feed no matter how tempting it is. it will make the tank super dirty super fast i no lol. good piranha keeping :)

Hi.

If the reds are very little, which I suppose it is that way, you friend would be able to keep them in that 60 gal for a shot period of time but soon he'd have to upgrade the tank in, lets say 2 to 3 months.

For 19 reds you'll need at least a 300 gal tank otherwise get rid of the most of them before it is too late and the P's end up dead.

Good luck.

personally I'd take 10 of them to lfs and try for some store credit. Or try to sell some.

lol 19. Even ordering 12...come on. I had 6 RBP's in a 115 and I thought I was cramping them. Anyways i would agree with Armand and mfgl...store credit!!

I kept only 3 in a 50 gallon breeder which is the footprint of a 65, only the 65 is a little taller. Not much room for any more to grow right.

Heres my exp with RBP's in an undersized tank:

Years ago I put 12 baby RBP's in a 75 gallon. That lasted about 5 months before the dominate ones would pick on the weaker ones til they killed em. I even kept em well fed. After about a year (give or take a few months), the final number was 5 adult RBP's. All 5 lived comfortable for about another year. 2 of em even paired off and started to breed.

I don't think your buddy researched before buying.

I like the way you think! I was just looking at my 5 reds housed in a 125 and made a mental note to be on the lookout for a larger tank. Mine aren't even close to grown and they're cramped.

For all those out there looking for the mystical solution to Piranha killing each other....DON'T OVERCROWD!

IMO each Natererri should have 30 gallons to itself. I don't believe in the theory of buying 38 baby reds to house in a 55 gallon and saying ''Yeah, later on I'm gonna get a 300 gallon later on. Most times ''later on'' never comes. A little forethought and common sense can and does save a lot of headaches.
