Hi. I am hoping someone might have a good idea about this. I have a 66 gallon hex tank (free, scratched up) I am trying to decide if this tv stand will hold under ~500+ lbs. I weight 250 and feel very stable on it, but that is not good enough. I was thinking it could use a rear middle support (maybe front but would rather not). It is very thin pho plywood on the side panels, with the four corners being 2" x 3/4" hardwood? maybe pine. Those four corners are the only real supports. The stand almost 40" tall. Any advice that is good advice is greatly appreciated.

as long as everything is still tight and theres no "wiggle" to it then you should be fine..
you can park a truck on those old tv boxes..

i would reinforce that stand with some 2x4's along the top of the inner cabinet. its worth the investment and you still get to use the stand. just something to think about: not even counting gravel, decorations, rocks, or fish, the tank with water will weigh about 500 pounds. easily with everything else, it could weigh 600. just make sure you are confident the stand can hold that much weight if you decide to use it

Like chesterthehero said...make sure there is not wiggle and that the joints are tight and you should be fine. If you are the worrying type you can always as some more supports so that you will have piece of mind :)

Thanks guys.. I am re-surfacing and adding those supports. I am the worrying type.. safety first. I will have pics up soon as I get the tank primed.

Almost Done. Now remember, free tank, scratched to hell, limited budget. I would have liked to panel the sides with oak plywood, but that would have been far more expensive. The existing paneling was to thin and damaged to sand down.
Under weight there is a little wiggle but I deem it somewhat normal, I will try to post video but no promises.
The top is removable (so it can fit through doorway) and is made from hardwood floor scraps.. prelaminated.. very nICE.
I did support the rear of the stand with two 2x4s (really 1.5x3.5)
$10 for TV stand
$25 for paneling, 2X4, extras

I purchased the new Fluval U4, yesterday.. I have to say, I really like it so far.. Very quiet (almost silent with even flow option). Though I like the canisters because I can create my own filter mediums.. I think this filter can be readily modified. The two side filters are polisher/carbon combo. I think it will be easy enough to put one buffer one side and one carbon when it is time to replace them. Draw back is that the U4 has a very small center chamber for bio media.
This tank will be planted once I get my lid from the glass shop.
