1st arowana

There is really no such thing as a first "good" arowana because most of them require the same level of care and in my opinion they are all "good", but aggression is a different story. From a beginner stand point you have two options a jardini and a silver, since these are the most common and cheapest arowana. Jardinis are more on the aggressive side as to silvers the more semi-aggressive side. Its really up to the aggressiveness of the tank mates you plan to have. Also jardinis stay smaller, so you might want to take that into consideration. Once you get the hang of keeping one and can aproprietly house one, you can move on to the more expensive types.

Jardini's are a gamble unless your other fish will get bigger than him. I've heard countless stories of Jar's being peaceful...till around the 10" mark then they kill everything in the tank.
Silver's are a good choice if they are not the first fish added to the tank. Once they establish their territory, new comers have a chance of being in trouble. Silvers can grow 20"+ in a year. Awsome fish.

I have not done too much research yet, just want to know the basics. what about black arows

What kind of experience do you have keeping fish? Big tanks? Arowana are not really a beginner type fish.

no big tanks, but lots of small fish tanks thank's for the link chaitika

I suggest waiting until you are 100% sure you can get a big tank, before getting an arowana. Meaning, unless you can drop everything, and go out and buy a big tank with appropriate filters, and covers, stand, etc, don't get an aro.

Blacks are almost the same as silvers, morphologically, except that they're darker and slenderer. And they cost about five times as much as a silver, but then again they almost never get DE. They both reach 4'.

Jars reach 3', but are usually a species-only tank sort of fish. Some tolerate specific tank mates, some tolerate most fish, but most don't tolerate anything.
