Hey guys, this is my 1st post and I wanted to say that the site is very informative. I really appreciate all the good info that i've received here so far, even though I was just lurking. Well enough of that. I wanted to get some opinions on my canister.

It's made from 4" pvc, 550gph pump, gravel on the bottom layer, active carbon on the second layer, and filter material on the 1st layer. The hose barbs are 3/4" pvc with 3/4" id vinyl hose for the supply and return lines. I built the spray bar from 3/4" pvc pipe.

I know it's not the prettiest thing in the world but it seems to be doing a good job keeping the tank water nice and clear. I know the tank seems over stocked, but all the Pseudotropheus Socolofi young are finding a new home very soon. I was stupid enough to remove their mom when she was holding, and now i'm stuck with about 14 1 1/2"-21/2" babies.

This is not the canister i'm going to keep. It is more or less a prototype.

27 views, I must have done something right...lol. It seems to clear my tank up really quick when I really stir up the sediment. I was reading about using "scrubbies" as the bio filter. What brand do you guys use?

Idk if there's a specific brand, Just check your local dollar store for pot scrubbers. Next time you make another canister, take pics of the progress :)

Actually, I think it looks pretty good :) Nice DIY!

scrubbers are terrible in a canister setting.
any of these would work:
matrix
ceramic media
lava rock
even gravel isnt to bad

Thanks guys. I might start tomorrow. I'm a commercial plumber by trade, so all of the materials are always on hand. I just need to get a better 3/4" tap.

Pretty clever.
I like the use of the coupler instead of screw on fittings for an end piece, keeps material cost down.
Only problem I could see is spillage when popping the top off, with no valves showing.
You might already have your media bagged for ease of service, if not, you might consider doing it.
On media choice, scrubbies will always work, even in a canister.
Lots of surface area at a cheap price.
Overall, well done.
