My 1500 only has/had about an inch of sand and the rays have shifted it all to the back now so I have half a tank with no sand and the other half has 2" a deep bed. :nilly:

Question is, if I bring the sand bed up to 2-3" deep will this cause any health issues (Black sand syndrome), dead pockets of poisonous gas in the sand or anything like that?

Will the sand just end up all in the back again like the thin layer of sand?

Thanks

well ive got a gulper i havent cleaned his sand for a month it was about 3-4 inches deep, just a lot of crap builds under the sand, takes a lot of maintenance too shuld stick with rocks, a pleco would help alot too

I do the same thing with my tanks. my tanks are planted so my plants are more happier with deeper sand beds- I'm always rearranging the tank anyways HOWEVER.......

I'm going to be getting MTS snails soon due to the fact that I'm finally happy with my layout and the ramshorn snails are almost gone thanks to the assassin snails.....

as soon the ramshorns are zapped out i'm gonna put in mTs for steady supply of food for the assassins and to keep the sand bed circulated.... mts bury themselves in sand bed so it's gonna be a great solution for me.

The problem with deeper sandbeds (so I've read here) is that they can trap gasses/etc that can quickly change your water parameters if they are allowed to build up then get released from sifting the sand.

That being said, if you have rays that are sifting the sand on a regular basis, I don't think you would have problems with gas/etc building up in the sand.

I wouldn't risk putting plecos with rays (just in case the plecos develop a taste for the rays' slime coat).

Keep in mind I have no experience with rays or sand substrate...
