i dont know how he got it. i have aqua clear filter for 40-70 gallons on a 55. it was just him with 2 1 1/2 inch festaes and 4 danios. the festaes have been gone for a few days now and now its him the 4 danios and a 1 inch green terror. i feed him hikari gold+ nls mixed in the same container.every other week ill give either beef heart or blood worms frozen. i do weekly water changes two 5 gallon buckets filled an inch from the top. i try to match the temps by feeling the water with my hand and i try to get it as close as possible. i use prime before i refill.how could he have gotten this? and im testing my water tomorrow after noon after school at my lfs.

how could he have gotten this?

is 10 gallons enough to change with weekly water changes?

what is the best way to cure hith? its still in its early stages theres about 5 holes and are still small

doing a quick search i found put garlic juice on the food and do a more specific diet towards that species with added water changes etc.
i want to get more opinions though so thats why im posting on here.

any opinions on if/what i should change anything that im doing

i would do atleast 30% water changes weekly

get metronidazole for the whole in the head which usually is attributed to poor water quality among other things

You need to test your water MUCH more often...especially if you don't have a good baseline to work from.

Water quality sometimes can go "bad" very very quickly (for various reasons)...and water quality is one of the biggest issues with fish stress...leading to fish illness...and ultimately fish death. Get yourself a test kit or test strips.

Or drive your lfs crazy taking your water there every week to be tested!;)

Had HITH problem with 2 of my oscars, I used API General Cure took the carbon out of my filter(for good).. And did 40% WC every week(still do).
And I stop feeding feeders to them.. And feed them nothing but NLS now... Haven't had a problem since, I'm about 85% sure it was the feeders I've heard that carbon may be cause but no know fact, but I took it out anyway, Hope yours gets better soon GOOD LUCK!!!

Great reminders.:) No carbon in the filter if medicating...and that sometimes feeders can be a problem.

sorry had to cut that last answer short (im at work shhhhh) but best way to cure hole in the head or H.I.T.H. is to make sure your water is crystal clear and use straight metronidazole or a medication like Tetra Parasite Guard which has metronidazole in it and follow the directions EXACTLY (make sure you remove all of the carbon from your filter if you are using it). Depending on how bad it is depends on how much time it will take to heal.

pictures of your tank and the fish would help also

how much does metrondazole typically cost and where could i get it from? i read the part about use it as exactly as the directons say but dont you think it would be more effective/straight to the source if i coat the food in it instead of just putting it in the tank? i would post pics but my camera quality isnt good enough to where youd be able to see the hole plus the gt does not stop swimming.

Are you sure it is HITH and not something else. Do you have a pic? Usually, soft water fish like Oscar, Geophagus, Discus and Angels fish are suceptable to HITH, and I have never heard that GTs, which came from alkaline water, can be infected by HITH. HITH is a slow eroding desease that disfigure the fish, but doesn't kill them. I had one GT died quickly form an acute bacterial infection in the head region with oozes bleeding out that looked like HITH, but it is not.
