I only have a 2.5 gallon as quarantine tank, will this be ok as quarantine tank for 1.5 - 2 inch loaches? I just bought 5 pcs Kubotai loach and would like to quarantine them first in the 2.5 Gal?
I added a really dirty sponge to the tank, though it was not connected to the airhose, it was inside my other established tank

Hello; Thats a small amount of water and may develope water quality issues fast. Can it be kept viable for the fish? I do not actually know from experience not having used such a small tank.
Perhaps if you can be very careful with the amont of food and do some regular water changes. You may be on a very narrow tightrope with regard to water conditions.

My take on sponge filters and beneficial bacteria (bb) is that the bb cling to surfaces fairly well. I would likely have squeezed much of the "dirt" from the sponge in a pail of water and addit to the tank that way. There should still be plenty of bb on the sponge. I woul also hook up the air while in the QT.
Here is a link to an article that discusses bb clinging. http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/nitrogen_cycle.html

thanks, I'll test water parameters later. the dirty sponge from the old tank, I attached an air hose to it so its running :)
Planning on skipping quarantine , will observe if the loaches have any visible issues, if none, I'll throw them into my other big tank.
