I have an empty 2.5 that I don't really want to put any fish in and don't have the patience to make look nice in terms of making it a nano planted tank, I was thinking I could make a miniature sump for a smaller tank (just as a fun functional project)
If it is possible, how would I go about doing it?

The smallest I've used was 10 gallons.

If you wanted to, it could be used as a sump for a saltwater pico tank setup, something like a 12x12x12 cube. You'd have enough room for a filter sock, some bio media, and a small pump. Imo, youd almost be better off with a simple plastic tote of greater volume though.
