i'm planning on running 2 AC110's on a 90 gallon.

do you think it's a good idea to run one purely for mechanical and the other for biological? since i'd have to service the mechanical media more often, this will be more efficient?

Bacteria grows everywhere... so your "mechanical only" filter will still house bacteria...

The AC 110 moves a lot of water. How will you prevent waste from getting into it? When waste is pulled into Bio Media it clogs the pores that are the single benefit to Bio Media.

I personally do not subscribe to the belief that Bio Media is even necessary and have filtered many tanks for many years without it having zero problems doing so...

Good point.

my tank is a high 24". Sooo, i was thinking of using a short intake tube w/ the bio media only filter, and a long intake tube on the mechanical filter.

just playing around w/ ideas since i'm waiting for my stand.

Depends on the stock you plan to have.

Only planning on housing only 1 monster (red devil/ midas probably)

Since getting waste in the filter is virtually inevitable... and since having bacteria in the filter is inevitable...

I feel it's much better off to set things up with these inevitable facts in mind...

As making one "Bio Only" and the other "Mechanical Only" can only be a theory in our minds, not a reality in our tanks...

The only way to make a filter "Bio Only" is to put thorough prefilters on it... but then the prefilter is serving as the mechanical filtration so it's not really "Bio Only" is it?

Yeah personally i like to pre-filter even my bio-media, it's much easier to rinse filter pads tank water than to clean the gunk out of most bio-media.

two should do you well. my 100 has two eheim pro 2, and an ac110. im planning on adding another Ac110 just for bio.

I run dual AC50's on my 20Long & have had great success using one for mech & one for Bio. I know nutcase is gonna crucify me on this one, but it works very well in my experience... First off, my powerhead is shooting across the back wall from right to left. The water passes over the heater, then into range of the first AC50 (mech).
AC50 #1---- has no prefilter & is loaded with 2 sponges, then the stock AC50 biomax bag. In theory, this is the 3-stage workhorse & could handle the entire tank if necessary & it gets cleaned weekly.
AC50 #2----In the far left corner of the tank, I have another AC50 for bio. This one has a prefilter to keep any leftover gunk out (AC50 sponge cut in half), then is loaded with one sponge & an AC70 biomax bag is stuffed in there for max bio surface area. This media combo leaves about half of 1 space open on top of the HOB, which I find convenient for adding polishing cloth or carbon or a water-softener pillow without having to pull power or remove the carrier. Since its prefiltered, the polish cloth lasts a long time & the water softener doesnt get too dirty. The prefilter is replaced & the whole filter is cleaned when flow starts to drop, which is about once every 2 months, so I know the first AC50 is doing a good job getting the gunk before it hits the prefilter.
It has been MY EXPERIENCE that this combination works very well. It may work just as well with no prefilters & 3-stage in each AC50, but this way I only have to clean one filter on any regular basis...

EDIT: Forgot one key thing... Squeeze the prefilter under tank water to get the air bubbles out before firing up the filter. The sponge can hold a lot of air...

It works fine because you have more than enough filtration. In theory (or something like that), the biomedia is going to get clogged up much faster without a prefilter. In real life, you have more than enough space for bacteria to grow so it doesn't really matter.

I have the foam block, a layer of filter floss, and the biomedia in my AC110. Works well, the filter floss seems to do a good job.
