i recently bought a Japanese Trapdoor Snail. later that day, i noticed a baby snail crawling about. i put him in a floating breeding trap. later the next day, i found another baby, and put him in as well. im wondering where did they come from? there were no eggs, and no signs of the snail giving birth (i dont know if trapdoor snails are live bearers or egg layers). did they hitch a rid? if so, how? they couldnt have been on his shell because i clean it repeatedly with my finger and they couldnt have come in the bag because i only pulled him out of the bag.

Trapdoor snails are livebearers. Unless you bought new plants which could also harbor some "pest" snails such as trumpets, ramshorns and bladders (Physas sp.), your trapdoor snail is trying to deliver her babies. These snails prefer algae and are quite difficult to supplement on other foods. They are coldwater species so if conditions become unfavorable, they will withdraw into their shells and refuse to come out at all. Actually, these are by nature shy and are the trickiest in my experience to feed.

I might add trapdoors are sexual. Trapdoors aren't exactly very prolific either usually delivering only about 2-4 batches a year as most people claim to be. Males will have a shorter and curly tentacle which is their sexual organ for copulation. Females have two straight and evenly sized tentacles.

Check this for more details.

so in order for the babies to survive, i should put them back in the main tank where there is algae?
Yes. Your tank may harbor organic matter that they may eat. You could provide dead oak leaves for them as well.
