this is the kind of thinking that helps get many fish banned from certain states and such . highly illegal , stop hurting the hobby .

seriously why would you take him down the river? to hurt that river? if you stopped to think what the fish you are releasing might do then you will see why alot of fish are banned. this hobby is going down the drain in alot of states now because of people like you. "just put it in the river". its very simple if you cant keep it, kill it or flush it down the toilet, or sell it to someone who can take care of the fish. just think twice before you do something stupid like putting a fish in a river.
