I am going to be setting up a new tank soon and I have a question.

I currently have one Rena xp3 setup on the 55g I am going to be replacing with a new 150g tank. I plan on moving the existing filtration over to the new tank.

I thought I would buy another Rena XP3 or XP4 and run them both on the new tank. My question is would it be a good idea to let one of them be the main "mechanical" fiiltration and let the other filter have the "bio" load in it? or is best to have both in both of the filters?

Would be fine to split the filtration up like you mention, an Xp3 and an Xp4 would be great on a 150g.

Ive got 2 Xp4's on a 125, power heads are out of the question.
Ive got enough flow to create a whirlpool

Because of their low actual flow rate(under 200gph for either the xp3 or xp4) the xp line doesn't make for very good mech filters. I would recommend going with a pair of AC110s to handle the mech load.

I am trying to keep as much equipment out of the tank as possible, not to mention the noise those filters tend to generate. Can you think of something else that might help me out?

Back to your original question, I would have both types of filtration in each cannister. That way you won't be S.O.L. if your bio-filter would happed to die on you. I'm am running a dual cannister setup right now and have the bottom basket on each for my mech and the rest all bio, that way it also helps keep my bio media much cleaner than by having all bio since the filter will suck up detrius no matter how it's setup internally.

I would add a FX5 now and then upgrade your XP3 to a FX5 down the road if needed.
