My Aunt bought me 2 three inched channel catfish for my upcoming birthday. She thought they were the cutest fish in the store, but had no idea how big they got. So now I'm stuck, should I let them get as big as I can? And let them live a horrible, cramped life? Or should I just release them, there's a close creek nearby. It runs on rainwater, so the ph is pretty low there. I can seperate a section for them comepletly, so if I had to guess...they would have around 600 gallons. Would that work? I could head down there and feed them if I wanted to. I want to make sure the cats are as big as possible IF I release them. So how long would they last in the 10 gal until they are maybe 5 inches? What's your opinion on this idea? The creek get's a bunch of worms during rain...there's tadpoles...and mosquito fish. Think they'll survive? No one I know will take them.

Id say neither, in the the creek theres always a chance theyll get out, a racoon will get them, or some other tragedy. They should last for a little while in your 10 gallon, save up some money and buy yourself a 55, mine lasted for 2 yrs in a 55 before he out grew it. Or, if you could swing it, get a stock tank and keep em in there, the large tuber ware containers from walmart work too, the ones for like 30 gallons

trade them in for something that a 10g tank is suitable for

mine outgrew my 180gallon fom 3 inches in 4 months! he is over 14inches now and needs a new home.

some options
larger tank
rubbermaid (for now, you can get fairly large ones for like ten bucks)
pond (also some cheap ones that would be suitable for him)
return him
craigslist (sell him or give him away)

I like the idea of the rubbermaid tubs. I don't mine too much if I can't see them, so a rubbermaid would be perfect, maybe build a pond out of one? How large can you buy rubbermaids?
