Hello everyone,
Just curious, is it possible to house 2 FH's in a divided 90 gallon? I know it's done when attempting to breed, but can they live their lives out this way? I was thinking of putting 2 of my males in a divided 90, but not 100% sure yet. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Isn't a 90 typically a 4 foot tank? So they'd each have a 24" x 18" space to swim in? That's so small.... :(

magpie magpie i fully agree and this is why I posted. I've seen them divided when breeding, however do you think I have a better shot of purchasing a female and keeping it with a male in a 90? Possibly put in a cave that the female can fit into while keeping the male out. Just tossing out ideas before I consider this a no go idea, thanks again

It comes down to what your opinion of "okay" is.
Will the tank be able to handle the bioload? I would say yes, with adequate filtration and maintenance it probably will.
Will the fish have enough room to swim? In my opinion no, 2' of horizontal swimming space for a potentially 12-15" fish would not be adequate.

I think that getting a smaller female than the male, and having multiple flowerpots that only she can fit into, is a better idea.

Gourami Swami Gourami Swami I totally agree and I will not be dividing long term. I'm going to keep 1 of my males in a 90 solo. With my other male, I am going to experiment with a female with tons of hide spots and see how she fares. I'll post my experience on the forum. Thank you guys for the info and for solidifying what I knew as an awful idea.

No you can not. . Once established, if one is really an asshol, One will die slowly from stress just by being on one side even if divided

I'm not talking water or bio load... it's stress.

What I did on some of my breeding cichlids was make holes in the divider big enough for the female to get away. Kept the fighting really minimal and the female would remember where to go to get away eventually

this is about 2 males no?

housing a fh depends on its size. some breeders divide a 30gallon into 5 for grooming fries. 90gallon divide two seems good to me. ive divided my 30 gallon into 3 parts for my 2 upcoming fh fries. increase the space as it grows older
