2" Florida Spotted gar? too small to tell

These two came in with the feeder comets. Thanks Toehead! They are about 2" and already trying to eat my neons(which are half the size of the gar) They appear to be florida spotted but there is a little spike at the top of their tails that the adults dont seem to have. (I know they are going to eat my neons, i dont care about them, they are filling the void til my other fish grow)

I don't know about the tail but the coloration is definitely right for a juvenile of that size.
 
Those look to be Florida Gar and the little "spike" at the top of the tail will eventually fade away in a month or 2. Nice work man...
 
most likely Florida gars. the tail filament is present in the young of all gar species and degenerates as the fish grows larger (and is often times nipped off by other fish). young gars can actually retain the tail filament for many months, sometimes even when they are 12" or larger.--
