Let me just start off by saying that i'v always been a fan of eheim's specifically the Classic's. They have never let me down. I've always had about 8 running at the same time.

I recently started using the Fx5 and i'm very impressed. I just got a 180 gallon tank. I have 3 Fx's at my disposal and a 2217

Right now i'm running 2 Fx5's on the 180 gallon. I'm still debating weather i should run the 2217 aswell. Electricity is not an issue because i'm renting but i dont want a lot of hoses, in/out valves in the tank.

Even though they say that the fx5 is for a 400 gallon tank, its really doesnt filter for 400 gallon

I plan to keep arrow's so they are messy and i'm a fan of over filtering.

My question is should i add the 2217

Fx5 will filter 400 gallons if you have a few guppies in it.
Realistically they have a flow rate when stacked with media around 600 gallons an hour.
2 x fx5's on 180 gallon overkill. Plenty of mechanical, biological, chemical filtration capacity. Normally more filtration is better, but in this case you already have 2 of the best canister filters going around. Save your money and electricty.

Thanks for the input guys! The only problem is one of the fx5 i have has a noticeably slower flow rate than the other. I'm not sure why, someone on the forum asked me to check if there was something obstructing the flow which is not a bad idea and check the impeller which i plan to do in the next maintainince. I might just throw in the 2217 since i already have it and its really just sitting there.

Update: I decided to just go with 2 fx's. They seem to be very quiet and i just introduced some new fish in the tank and they seem to be doing great!

I use a 2217 to plumb my UV, but as far as filtration capabilities go, they really pale in comparison to the FX5.

just a thought on the restricted flow. There is a purge valve on the bottom. You may be able to get any blockage to come out that way.

Ive gotta get me some FX5s! Check your orings if youve got different flow through one. Are media in both the same?
I recently replaced all the orings on my cannister filters and noticed a significant increase in performance. I guess they had been gradually degrading and i hadnt noticed. I recommend anyone thats been running a cannister awhile to swap theirs out. Unfortunately the prices are near-criminal.
