I can get one Tetra Tec Filter with built in heater rated for 300 GPH for $25 from a worker at my LFS. Then from Drs. F+S they have a penguin bio-wheel rated for 350GPH for $33.

The other option was to build a PVC overflow to sump. I'm guessing this would cost about $75-100. I was planning on using 600 GPH so my tank would be turned over 5x per hour.

Thoughts?

Go with the sump. HoB filters are crap. Only HoB's I would use would be an Aquaclear.

obviously the sump will be much better.

But for a light stocking and you providing a good part of the actual cleaning with your vacuum , a couple of 350gph filters will work.
