Hi :)

I have a 135 gallon (6' x 18" x 2') tank. I have 6 discus, schools of tetras, a couple of dwarf gouramis, a few types of livebearers--And one nice male betta.

Years ago, while working in a fish store, I heard tales of people keeping 2 male bettas in a 6' community tank. The story went that the bettas would establish separate territories in a tank that big, and do threat displays to each other without actually fighting. It sounds pretty neat, but I have never actually seen it in practice.

Has anyone ever heard about this?

Thanks!

I could see it working if there are enough spots to claim, and in a tank that big I'd be surprised if both fish ran into each other often, but my first thought would be why have bettas in a 6 foot tank? Then again if the betta is fine with the gouramis I don't see another betta hurting, as betta and gourami aren't supposed to be compatible.

Personally, if I were adding bettas though, I'd probably add a nice harem of females.

It's quite late to join this thread...anyway, 2 male bettas in same tank, big or small is not a good ideal. The weaker one will always hide or die cause of tresses. The only time Bettas live peacefully together is when you breed and raise them together in same tank and never separate them (apply to male bettas), as soon you broke their family link then they will fight each other to dead. Another thing hat bettas in a large tank = it's boring fish. Bettas look best in half or 1 gallon bow! :P

6 feet is plenty of room if you provide hiding spots and decor that breaks up the view. You can even block off parts of the tank with rocks to make isolated areas. Add a bunch of females and you're fine.
