Ok, Im cycling my tank, fired it up yesterday and added about a cup of ammonia and it was reading about 4 ppm...tossed in about 5 krill in it. This morning I took all the yums that I siphoned from the gravel from my 40g planted betta tank and cleaned their filter mida out in the new tank this morning. I also put most the decor from the betta tank in there. I have been at a music festival all day and I just checked the readings and my Nitrites are at about 10 ppm and nitrates are at 5 ppm, but my ammonia is off the charts!(el stinko) Is this nessicaraly a bad thing? Im leaving it tonight but should I do a WC in the am? or just let it run?

When I first tried to cycle my pond, I added a lot of ammonia. It was a little more than you added -- it was a lot. Nothing happened for a month. I guess I had poisoned the system -- not even bacteria could grow in the mess I made, LOL. So, it is possible to put too much ammonia in. Since it's early, I'd say start over, rather than wait. It sucked waiting a month for nothing.

Howdy,

You're doing the right thing by seeding the new tank with old filter bacteria.

Now you need patience ...

Oh im not in a rush, it will be cycled before I go pick out stock. Good news is the Nitrites showed up this morning in force, 5ppm+ and the nitrates are still holding at 10ppm..so it shouldnt be too long before it all ends up as nitrates. thanks for the help.
