ok i just bought 2 pairs of convicts. the 2 females(1.5inch), 2 males (2.5inch)
they're meant to be feeders or sell babies as convicts are for some reason very rare locally. however i've never had convicts and would like some advice. im gonna feed them tetramin (for cichlids) they are in separate 25 gal. tanks (a 55 gal barrel cut in half) at least i think i have females the just have orangish/pinkish colourings in the stomach region. ok basically what do i do. i have a good bit of experience in fish keeping i just want to kno if there is anything particular for convicts. and how to get them to breed faster i have brine shrimp eggs that ill hatch when neccessary for the fry but what else(ill supplement the adults diet with shrimp veggies mollie feeders that i breed but is that enough)??

Convicts you really don't have to do anything special to get them to breed.

:D well thats good news.
i knew that they were easy to breed but really nothing special is needed or nothing that would speed up the process??????

i was told you can do big water changes and it will help with the process..its supposed to mimic the rainy season with the temp and water changing so drastically which causes them to go into breeding mode, but then again, ive herd you can throw a pair in a bucket and leave them alone and they will breed just as good.

I have a black male con and a pink female con who breed every 2 weeks. I have a 20 gal FILLED with fry, I've stocked my LFS with them, givin them to friends and still have too many to deal with. Just becareful because they multiply FAST. There is nothing special to do to breed them either. If I want to jump start the process, I give them blood worms and crank the heat up a little bit, then it's almost instant

I have a 75 gallon with cons and they breed every couple of weeks, nothing special done.

Big water changes will work, just make your replacement water a little
cooler then the tank water. That will help simulate breeding conditions. Also feed meaty foods like worms & shrimp.

You really don't need to do anything thou. Convicts are basically aqua-rabbits. They are going to reproduce constantly no matter what you do.

Convicts are kinda rare out this way too, sometimes males are at the shops, but I have not seen a female in ages. Kinda sad.

ok thanks everyone
and yeah ill sell some fry and then feed leftovers to my O's (at about 1/2 inch) so i shouldn't have to much
but how do i know when they're sexually mature?
