I wouldn't put cichlids in there with the Senegal. A true pair of Jewel or kribensis would be aggressive towards the bichir. Jewel and kribensis dwell mostly at the bottom not good for Senegal.

It has to be a specie that won't out compete the Senegal for food. What other fish do you like?

Lesser spiny eel , Freshwater butterflyfish .

Would work fine because they don't go to the bottom for food. I've had them and never seen them eat off the substrate. You will have to have floating and sinking foods.
