1 i have a small firemouth that looked awesome in the store with a vivid red bellie now that he is in my tank his color has faded he has no more vivid red belle plain and dull color why would that be? and 2 i have a new 2in red devil is it normal for them to have a brownish stripe down the side with a dull color when there young will they color up red when they get older? he looks like he is starting to get white patches is this normal? i have him in a tank with the firemouth and a convict right now i will be moving them to a 65g but so far they seem fine together he chases the firemouth but not much and doesn't bother the convict at all i have been watching most of the day. he doesn't seem as aggressive as people say i thought it would be much worse. guess I'm used to my 7red bellies p's and all that mayhem lol

your firemouth is probably stressed...give it some time; maybe you have different decor in your tank that's making him have different colors...feed him high quality foods.

your midas/rd will change colors thru out its life...from orange, white, black etc....when young they will have bars running down and very pale and will eventually go away.

cons will hold their own. you might want to watch your firemouth carefully since its not too aggressive compared to the other 2

you answered your own question. its stressed because you put a relatively peaceful cichlid in with a hyper aggressive cichlid, it may not look like much chasing to you but for a newly introduced fish it could be like hell. the FM is not in the same league as a con or devil. the con isnt even in the same league as the devil when they mature. the con will hold up the longest but will ultimately lose the war.
they will not all live together for long as the devil will most likely kill the other 2 cichlids. i would bet very soon too.
i would suggest the fm and con in a single tank with some dithers and put the devil alone in the 65g for life. maybe a dual tank stand would look good with a predator on top and small community on the bottom.

yeah that is what i think now toi moved the fm and convict to another tank i have a red devil and a midas or 2 red devils in my other tank they seem to be getting along fine but i think i'll take one of the devils back to the store and keep one solo
