Anybody else's bichir/bichirs very active all day? And anyone else's stay primarily right below the waters surface?

Mine does both and all the bichirs I see at my lfs hide a lot or are very calm and are always at the bottom of the aquariums.

yeah i had one that did that same thing. its because the are air breathers and need to go get a gulp of air every few minutes. my tank ended up being to deep for him and he died. but that DOESNT mean yours will. the behavior your seeing is normal. at the lsf they are just nervous.

I guess my tanks depth top to bottom makes sense. My bichir's only about 6.5", maybe when he's bigger he'll stay down more. And sorry to hear about your bichir :(

I've got a sengal bichir now for about a week in a 150 gallon he's prob 4 inchs. First night I got him he spent the whole time at the top of the tank. Ever since then he's stays in his cave on the right side of the tank that he's claimed. He really never comes out maybe once in awhile after I feed them and the lights are out. I've never seen him go to the surface for air

Ya that's what I thought mine would be like but he's out all the time. He swims around the whole tank and keeps the Datnoids in check. lol

My Palmas Polli, Senegal, and Ornate are my most active bichirs. My 2 Dels seem to hang out behind or in the plants or rocks alot. None of mine have every sat at the top but I made sure I had enough hiding spots for all of them.

I thought maybe it was due to lack of hiding places but I added a lot of thick fake plants for cover and he never took to em.

when they are smaller they actually like to hang out by the top, so plants or caves that they can lay on that high is where they will hangout!
