1. The wood base on my tank isn't looking too good. I want to clean it up a bit. I don't want to make it darker or anything like that, just nicer looking. Like how it used to be. It isn't refinished, just regular sanded wood. What products are good for this?

2. On the glass tops there is some white residue. I tried Windex and it didn't come off. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

1. I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to achieve, maybe with a picture of that wood piece?

2. This is calcium from the water evaporating. It's a glass top? Then use a razor blade...just be careful not to scratch the glass.

without making the wood darker, i would sand it down and then put a coat of gloss polyurethane over it. i do this and that what makes it look shiny. if you dont want it shiny then use matte.

if the top is truly glass then dip it in clr the cleaner for like five minutes then rinse it off really good a couple of times and put it back on it should be good for a few more months. i do this with my 10 gallon tank like every other month but i have hard water

Yes it is a glass top. I will try the razor blade since it seems to be the quickest. Thanks for the options everyone.

I'm getting ready to call it a night, so no pic right now, but I bought the tank and stand used. The wood has a kind of whitish look to it, and some shadowy black marks towards the top where it looks as if water runoff from the glass stained the wood. I'll post up a pic this weekend.

Thanks!

Here is a pic. I tried to circle the white spots and black lines I was talking about.

What should I do to make it look nicer? I like the color it has now, minus the blemishes.

Are there any particular products that will clean it up?

Thanks.

I would personally say strip it back down to bare wood with a belt sander. If you don't have one there pretty cheap to rent at a local store. Then pick a stain color that you love the looks of, put 1 coat on with that. Then put a minimum of three coats of poylurithane on till it is nice and covered good with that now it's restained and water proof for aroun 35 bucks and looks brand new. I would say if you just tried to fix certain spots it would be un even and not look so good. Do the hole thing over and will look awsome.

before resanding it, go to home depot and get a can of wood/furniture buffing wax. apply a few light coats, buffing to a shine and it will clean the wood up nice without much work...and if it doesn't get the desired effect, then try to strip the wood. You can find the wax in the furniture stripping department and/or wood finishing products....
