ok iv got two qestions.

I was out at a creek netting small fish with my friend
and we found some fish they were light blue on the body weithe red fins. 2 were about 1.5 inches. the other was an inch. they look similar to carp. What are they. I would post pics but the fish didnt make it home:( :( .

Do logperch look similar to an adult when they are about half an inch as far as color. Do the sit on the bottom most of the time?

thanks,
Demon Fish

Many fish fit your general description (blue body and red fins).
A common one near me (redfin shiner Lythrurus umbratilis).

Since many fish fit your general description can you tell us if it's Lythrurus or a Cyprinella?

This is a redfin shiner

This is a bad pic of a red shiner
Cyprinela lutrensis

Edit: location will be important in identification without a picture. Where did you find these fish?

The first pic (redfin shiner) came from northern Illinois recently. I would feel pretty confident you found the same fish. Your colors could be more dramatic since you live a little further south. Fish In my area should be in full color right now.

Your darter may have been a slederhead or a logperch. Both have verticle body markings. Logperch have a "pig" nose which can make ID easy at a glance.

Thanks. I will try to catch some more redfin shiners and keep them alive. I also will try to get more darters because mine died. One was eaten by a crawdad that died right after he ate it and then my top minnows ate the crawdad.

You have topminnows large enough to eat a crawdad? I don't understand your previous post.

i think he means its a smal crawdad, maybe it multed and the minners picked at it till it died or it died and the minners picked it apart....happens to me all the time. (well..used 2)
