i'm going away for two weeks and i was wondering if i could get away w/ no water change? i have someone coming over to feed them every 2-3 days but when i asked if they could also do a water changes... they said they'd use a shop vac which they weren't kidding about. my p's are harmless but they don't believe me! so if i do a 75% water change before i leave and also change the charcoal and clean the filter a bit, would i be ok? are there any other precautions i can take? note: my alternative would be to risk a dirty shop vac in my tank. :screwy:

First off, dump the friend. Second, find someone who at least has common sense to look after your fish while you're away.

Starting out with a 75% water change and doing only minor feedings, you will probably be OK, depending on the filtration (edit: just noticed you are using FX5). You should be feeding only processed food...nothing live.

If you have the person you're referring to look after your fish, I doubt they survive, water change or not.

What do your parameters do now? Meaning, what are your nitrate levels after one week?

you'll be fine with 2 weeks and no water change, as long as whoever is checking on your fish doesn't do crazy feeding and leave all the uneaten food in there.
depends on what your regular feeding schedule you might even able to skip to feeding for two weeks but if you concern about they turn each other into food and trust your friend then you can prepare the portion for each feeding and instruct your friend to feed on schedule and don't over feed. as for water change, you can throw some large floating in the tank while you are gone, connect the light on a timer. as they grow they'll take care the nitrate in your tank so you don't have to worry about water change for 2 weeks.
sometimes I got lazy on my 180g and skip a water change or two with 11 pygos and I was feeding them about once or twice a week and water was fine.
