Hey guys, Im in the market to purchase two common wolves. Dont know where yet...but I would like to get a Black One and the blueish gray one I guess...LOL...I could get them now but im gonna wait till my lease is up at this apt in the next 3 months. Does anyone know where aggressive good quality wolves are sold? I am probably goin to start purchasing all the accessories now and that way when I move I will jus need to cycle the tank and get the fish. But either way I would like baby ones but would a 120 be a little to big for them to start in. I dont want to worry about grow out tanks and such.

Know Im hoping since they will be that small in a 120g tank that by time they were older they would have established territories on opposite sides of the tank. I will have plenty of hiding places, as Im going for an amazonian (maybe mispelled) setup. Not sure about live plants yet, but will have lots of driftwood and black sand with rocks. Well I want to emulate their natural habitat as much as possible so I really dont want lighting especially since they are nocturnal and will be more active w/ less light. But live plants would require LIGHT.

As far as food, this is where it gets entertaining. I want them on LIVE and Prepared foods. They are piscavourous (maybe mispelled) so as soon as I get them, I want them hunting. With that much space would they have a hard time catching feeders. And Im steering clear of any coldwater fish, as I know thats unhealthy for them. I want to set up breeder tanks for maybe some convicts or other tropical fish. I would also give them live shrimp, crayfish, insects, worms, frogs, lizards and etc. I would make sure that everything is QT'ed and safe for them to eat. As far as prepared foods, anything from the grocery store that is raw. Shrimp, tilapia, whiting, every now and then maybe some Krill and certain types of catfish.

Well Im sorry for the long post and I know its 3 months away, but I definitely want to be prepared and have them healty and happy. I have done all the research on them and they are a very TUFF and HARDY fish, but I jus wanted to run my plans by you guys for a lil help in things maybe Im missing. Thanks for reading and any help is appreciated.

all sounds good except you didn't research there aggression did you the rest sound right but you won't be able to get two wolf to live in a 120 all wolf fish species are very aggressive and would kill each other you could try a group of over three to spread out aggression but they still may just kill each other

as for tank size theres no such thing as to big of a tank for a fish unless theres bigger fish in it that will eat the small fish so your fine there don't worry you only need to grow a fish out so it won't get eaten or beaten up

you may be able to breed them but that would be hard to do they are hard to sex and hard to pair up and even then a 120 might not be big enough for a pair they get around 18''-20'' so if they started fighting one would most likely die and pairs are hard to form if you wan't to breed them mabye get like 5-6 and see if they form a pair and sell the rest but keep in mind a few may get killed in the process

or just get one that tank would be fine for one two would be risky they really need more room so they don't fight as much

the would like some light just make there light dim and mabye add a few low light plants

hope this was help full

Yeah I researched their aggression...jus maybe thought I could get away with it if I got them as babies and they grew up together in a 120g. But I understand what you are saying....well if I get one, I would rather find a Black one so other than that the diet sounds okay. I would keep temp between 82-85 degrees so he would be pretty active. Thanks for your help Killerfish. Does anyone else have any tips or ideas for me...? And where could I find a black one, I know their location has a great deal with their coloring or patterns.

as babies it may work.
unless one outgrows and eats the other.
a 120g would be to small for 2.
theyd probably kill each other once they hit 8 or so inches.
3 might work better.
if you get a black wolf, itll kill the others without mercy.

Black ones are pricey and pretty hard to come by. I know, I want one too :D. Shark Aquarium gets them sometimes and another site that I can't remember the name of. I'm on the list for both sites and neither is optomistic about getting one any time soon.

keep them around 80F try not to go above 86F

by black ones do you mean hoplias lacerdia or just a color morph of the common wolf hoplias malabaricus both fish have patterns that can varie but lacerdia has a much blacker look to it with a good pattern but malabaricus has a lighter color and less pattern mala is much more common then lacer

OR do you mean hoplias aimara they get huge and are very rare in the pet trade and they get around 4 feet long bigger in the wild and are very $$$$ they are the king of wolf fish they are extremely aggressive when older they have been know to attack people in the wild but these are very hard to find and if you got one people here may find where you live and steal it LOL but seriously they are very hard to find so i don't think thats what your talking about

no he's talking about a different fish. if you go to youtube and type in "black wolf fish" or "xingu" you can see a vid of the one he is talking about. i'd post a link but i can't view youtube at work.

ohhh yeah i've seen that vid i think thats a lacerdia i'd wan't a wolf like that to that one seems pretty active i've never heard of SP. xingu black

Yeah thats the one I was referring to...looked very aggressive and pretty active...I love the BLACK....ONE BAD ASS FISH....and I think I might jus get one wolf cuz 3 full grown wolves would require what size tank to live pretty comfortably....or at least attempt to live comfortably, damn wolves want the tank to themselves....
