Well I recently had to seperate my fire eels. The bigger guy had enough of his 20" counterpart. He measures in at 22". Anyway...I moved the little guy into my tank in the kitchen. He escaped and I found him on the floor the second day after the move. Well he was alive that time. A little dryed up but was alive. Returned him to the tank. He was fine and ate later that night. Fast forward a week. He escaped again. This is after i tried to turn my tank into alcatraz. I still can figure out how he got out. The only open area is where my hob's drain into the tank. this is just enough space to where the water can drain in and not catch on the glass tops that I had put bricks on. Not enough space to get my index finger in between. Baffling to me. So just a heads up to new eel keepers.

Yeah, my old fire eel escaped from a really small hole which i never thought he would manage to fit through... but i ultimately ended up in the same situation as you, saved him the first time, but the 2nd time, i couldn't get to him in time...

Mine always swims into my ac110 lol im lucky he hasnt landed on the floor yet

I heard , if you have someplace for the eel to hide in, he wouldn't try to escape.
Do u guys have something like this?

Yeah. I have a log type hideout for him. He stays in there all day. I also dont have the tank filled to the top. Has about 5 inches left i could fill.

3 rules for fire eel is:

A place to hide. Large enough for your size eel. And at least two, I like PVC pipe for this.

Clean water. There very sensitive to nitrates.

No bulling. Keep him with smaller aggressive fish. Or with peaceful fish. I keep mine with oscars and have no trouble, but my eel is fairly larger than my oscars.

I found If I follow these three rules, they don't try to escape. My tire track eel would always go in my HOB filter. Put in another hide box, and it stopped right away. I'm sure there are exceptions to these rules and some just naturally want to escape. Hope this helps some MFK's out.
