So I was browsing my LFS' yesterday and saw a 20gal that sparked my interest. I was looking to stocking it with only Ghost Shrimp to get a colony going, for future uses.

Future Uses:Helping with String Algae/Algae in my koi pond. Simply keep me busy while my koi have fun outside my house.

Questions: Is a 20gal a good start? What do I need such as subtrate? Plants, Fake or real, if so what kind? what to feed them? Airstone or filter?

Possibilities: If I get a succesful colony with hundreds of shrimp, I will get more tanks and start more breeding tanks, space if grown wont matter due to my big pond. My LMB or Black Bullheads may enjoy the occasional shrimp.

Thank You to all who post and Help, Please all input is welcomed.

lol free bump but truthfully i have no clue but free bump :)

p.s nice pond

i dont think they will be able to make much of a dent in ur algae b4 they are eaten sry

I wouldn't recommend ghost shrimp as I've heard that they are difficult to breed. I would recommend Red Cherry Shrimp. They're like bunnies, they may be a little more expensive than ghost shrimp but you can buy just 10-15, throw them in a tank with some java moss and you'll have a tank full in no time.

But if you just want to get rid of algae, I think you can just get a UV sterilizer. I don't think shrimp will last long in a koi pond. If they see the koi eat their fellow shrimp then they'll go into hiding and won't forage.

The algae isnta big problem its just a few spots here and there. Also I would to see my LMB or lack bullheads hunt the shrimp, so Red Cherry Shrimp with Java Moss is the way to go with a 20Gal?

You don't need Java Moss, it's just nice to have in a shrimp tank. My shrimp love to forage on it. It can quickly take over your tank though.

Sand isn't that good of an idea considering that it can clog a filter rather easily.

For a filter, use a hang on back with a sponge filter, make sure to put a sponge on the intake of the hang on back filter.

If your shrimp see the koi or anything larger than them eat another shrimp, then they'll go into hiding and will be too frightened to eat the algae.

IF I had an air filter on a make shift stand above the substrate wouldn't it avoid pushing sand up? A mechanical filter wouldsuck up all the fry or some.

Iwill go shopping today for fish stuff, and I saw crayfish at one of my LFS, so do I go crayfish or shrimp?

I considered crayfish as feeders and also because I can't find shrimp any where in my town. I will check more LFS for tanks and other shrimp. (I just want an indoor tank to look at when I am not ouside.)

So yesterday I went to petsmart to go look at the 20gal, but I did not pick it up. However I could not resist getting the Ghost Shrimp, the girl said how many do you want? I said All of the, :) as of now they are in my pond doing great in the plant pot where the fishes can not get to them, is this a win? I want more and more ghost shrimp. My Pond needs a bit of spicing up.
