I just bought a 20 gal today and I am pondering in what to put in it. I am curious in what type of catfish you guys would recommend. I am currently debating on having the tank as either a US native tank, nice community tank of tetras or rainbows, breeding tank for a pair of dwarf cichlids, or some interesting oddball such as a catfish that could be a wet pet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you are going for tetras, then a school of cories, probably sterbai, will be good, probably with whiptail catfish to maintain your tank algae growth if any.

If you go for the oddballs, then go for spotted raphael and banjo catfishes, those stay smaller but usually, they just hide all day. Can also try a stone catfish too.

I have always been interested in the banjo cats. I like that they look like mini little river monsters. I have had a spotted raphael a few years back, they are a pretty cool fish, totally worth doing again. What about a frog mouth cat? My LFS has some cool looking two spot catfish, my understanding is that they stay small.

Might not be a popular idea, but what about a crab type set-up, aquascaped to have half land half water, would look really cool; something I may do in future. Those little red claw crabs I see at the LFS look great

tetras, barbs and blue guorami good. say 7 or 9 tetras , 5 barbs and 3 gourami. tetras will school the bottom, barbs mid and blue gourami top to bottom. or perhaps a few danios that pretty much stay at the top, or all 4, and a cory or 2. that be fully stocked.

I support the native idea. Maybe like 6 minnows, say 4 darters, and some type of madtom.
go on PC and look up noturus (madtoms) and see if they interest you, if so let me know I can give you some more info on them.
