Last there was a big storm and the power went out. it didnt go out for every long but when i came back on my 20 gallon filter never did, not sure why ever did. so now i have to go to petco after school today. what do you suggest i get? THanks
well nvm that plugged it into a different outlet on my power strip and now it works. funny thing is i tryed that last night when the power came back on
Sounds like it is time for a new power strip. If it has a surge protector, for what ever reason, they do not last forever. Power strips without surge protectors are cheaper and not necessary on fish tanks.
That happened to me on my salt tank at school. It is so frustrating trying to get everything working and then someone unplugging it and then changing the outlet. Very frustrating!

Get a new one. Make sure that its certified and not some cheap s**t Chinese knock off. Surge protection is not a must on fish tanks (unlike GFCI) but they can protect HOB and cannister impellor drives in case of lightning strikes.
Surge protectors employ metal oxide varistors across the ungrounded conductor and the identified conductor. If the voltage differance between the two peaks above 350 volts (as in the case of a surge) then the MOV shunts the current, protecting the devices you have plugged in to the power bar.
