I have an empty 20 gallon hexagon aquarium sitting around, and my wife is asking me to set it up as a saltwater for her. This would be my first saltwater, although I've done freshwater all my life. I know a 20 hex isn't ideal for pretty much anything, because of the small footprint, but I was wondering if we might be able to do something salt with it. I've found all kinds of information on setting up nano saltwater tanks, but nothing on a hex, so I'm guessing the same stocking load won't cut it.
I've got a Penguin 150 filter that I'd like to use- I'd rather avoid buying another filter for a 20 gallon, although if we have to, we may end up doing that. I also have several powerheads lying around that I could use in there if I needed more water movement. If I need to buy another filter, it's going to have to be a cheap one.
Also, we really can't afford to go with the lighting coral would need. It would be really cool to grow some type if we could, but it would have to be with some cheap lighting. Other than that, I've just been figuring we'll go with some live rock. The 20 hex does offer the opportunity to have a cool tower of live rock.
My wife absolutely loves checking out clown fish and different invertebrates in the LFS, but also loves other super bright fish. She likes typically shaped fish normally- she hates my FW things like my Polypterus and gar. So something long and slender(eel-like) is pretty out. And as I said with invertebrates, she really likes all kinds of different shrimp and hermit crabs.
If anyone has recommendations for a setup and stock list for us, I'd really appreciate some input. Thanks!
