a buddy of mine just got a 20 gallon and he is trying to fig out what he wants to do. he doesn't know much at all about salt and nether do I so any information on cost and stocking and equipment would be helpful on that if he went that route. For fresh, I suggested some tetras with either some rams or kribs. some driftwood, a sand bottom and turn the tank rimless by taking the to brace off. and get a coralife light ( I have seen this done with a 10 gallon, Is it possible with a 20 and safe?)

Also If you have done some 20 gallon please post pictures so we can get some Ideas thanks.

As long as it's sitting flat, it's safe enough with most 20 gallons, but sometimes you get a cheap one. I've seen people do it with 20 longs and 20 highs, and never heard of someone having a problem. I'd say it's safe, but I'd still regularly inspect it if you alter a tank in any way.

Apistogramma are something really awesome for a smaller tank. I had a couple (cacatuoides and agassizii) of them at one point, and got rid of them when I switched tank parameters. Wish I hadn't! They had a ton of personality.

Sand bottom keeps care simple, and you can grow some Anubias nana and some Java fern on pieces of driftwood in the tank to add some plant life and color. Both will attach themselves if you tie them on until they start growing. I'm a big fan of this for smaller tanks- no extra lighting needed for either of those plants, and growing them on pieces of wood makes cheap & dull pieces fancy, and keeps pruning simple! When they start to grow too much just yank the whole piece of driftwood out and cut some off.
