Decided i will be making a sump out of a 20 gallon tall tank. it should fit under my 75G tank nicely. found this design online, what do you guys think? or is there something better that could be done?

From what i hear, i dont even need to bother with bio balls in my sump because of the live rock i will have in the tank.

I've got the same thing going, 75g, but freshwater. Thinking of a sump/refugium built out of a Coleman picnic cooler. Hoping someone will answer my thread.

I'm beginning to think that any legitimate sump design will do. Until your post, I've not seen one that has the pump in the middle chamber...I thought that the tank water was supposed to enter the sump in one end, pass through the middle chamber, then get sent back to tank from the last chamber at the other end. I studied your pic but could not figure out the water flow pattern if the pump is in the middle chamber.

dude how did you make that, Im trying to find a design just like this but i dont know where to start, got a 75g and a extra 20g long for the sump and just finished building a stand where i can fit the tank in but i dont know where to start with the sump, where and how did you get the glass fittings like that. I dont get that concept of the glass how you put in place. Can you guide me? also i have a hang on the back skimmer so i dont think that column will be necessary. I dont need bio balls either so i will do LR. Get back at me please

When I biult my sump, I just measure the inside with and the hight of each compartment that I wanted. Took the measurements to a local glass shop and had them cut my baffles. I left a 1.5" space for water flow over and under the baffles.

I dont get that concept of the glass how you put in place.

On the baffles that I needed to water to flow under, I used a small pc of 2X4 to rest the baffle on and give me a 1.5" from the bottom. I used aquarium safe silicone to adhear in place and let it dry for 24 hours and cure for another 12

I would suggest using live rock an not using any bio balls. If you hang your skimmer off the back of the tank, then you could use the extra compartment for some live rock and your heater(s).

You could also take a look at how I made my sump out of a 55 gallon in the thread below

I hope this is helpful

thanks man, I get how it works now with the baffles and stuff. Great deal, Disregard my post on help Deaner, Mr. Cliff helped me out. but if you have any inputs it would be great to.

The multi - tank sump we have at work (was built by the idiots (sorry guys if you read this, but you know its crappy) before me) but it has the pump in the middle of it, doesnt seem to have any issues.

GL with the sumps.

The cooler idea might work, but the sides might not be a consistent side, or might expand when h2o was added, making baffles not fit, or fit properly.

I've made plenty of sumps out of 20-55 gallon tanks. That design looks pretty good, the only thing that I see that might pose an issue would be the baffles. They look a little too high. When designing a sump you have to take into consideration the recommended water height for the skimmer, as well as compensation for the amount of water that will fill up the sump when the return pump is shut off. Lowes or HD will have everything you'll need to make this happen. I use acrylic sheets and have them cut to size. You'll also need a bunch of sylicone for this.

does home depot cut them for you cause i did check online to see if they did have arylic and its pretty expensive but worth it
