Gherrosaurus Major Boteggi

Thought, ok, I'll go check it out.. said it was 12", so I'm thinking same size as the one I have..

Nope. Try 16". Scooped him up in a heartbeat!

And VERY tame for not being handled very much in the last yr of them owning him.

And it's a confirmed male.

Gonna give him a bath tomorrow, and get him set up in his new digs. He's taken a liking to his cardboard box with pillow case that's in the temp tank. lol.

Next is gonna be getting him to eat what everyone else eats.. dog food (fresh pet selects chicken and veggies), veggies, fruits.. occasional crickets and MAYBE thawed pinkies for this big guy.

They were feeding him Crickets (they would buy 500 and let them breed in his tank!) and superworms. They tried feeding him iceberg lettuce.. oy!

Nice pick up, I'm surprise the crickets didn't bite nor eat him lol. Crickets are ferocious if kept in a reptile's tank after dark. I didn't google it yet...but is that the scientific name of this skink? I've never seen this kind of skink...then again I don't know too many reptile species

That is the scientific name, however, it's not a skink. It's a plated lizard.

There are a decent amount of plated lizard species, but you don't come across too many of these that are actually tame because they are all wild caught.

There is only 1 person (so he says) that has captive bred this species, and I actually have one of the babies. Incubation for these guys is like 7-8 months, so it takes a dedicated person to breed them.

As for the crickets.. tell me about it! I HATE when people just dump crickets in the tank and let them in there. Not only are they ferocious, they are dirty and they smell.. But, like I said, getting his diet changed around for the best is going to be the hardest part.

Very nice pickup. Darn, with plateds were more easily accessible here. and Pazzoman, that's why don't leave crickets out of your sight, especially not overnight in the tank. Scientific name, gerrhosaurus major bottegoi.

Lol so thats a plated lizard...well one specie of them lol

I've never left crickets in my reptile cages that I had a long time ago...I usually fed them by a metal tong

Once a month I throw a dzn of crickets into the baby plateds cage, and they are gone by the next day. Right now there is still 1 that's evaded them all for the last week.
