Bought a tank and the tank was built in 1993 but it is solid so far and really leak testing it tonight; question is it came with rio pumps and I've heard mix reviews. Would you guys just scrapem and buy some new pumps or do you think it's worth trying first. He said the setups been running fine.

Why not test it and see if it works? What have you got to lose? It's not hard to replace a pump. I don't know if it's just me, but things used to be built to last. The stuff produced today isn't a patch on what it used to be. All mass produced with low overheads and no quality control. Starting to sound like my dad, but it's true to a certain extent. I'm still using a Aquaclear filter from the early 90's.

I would replace it if its an energy hog. Sometimes it's cheaper to get a new pump than replacing parts on a 20 yrs old pump.

I've had one of my tanks set up running 24/7 since 1987, and just replaced a pump on it because it finally wore out. If the pumps work, and are quiet......

I can already tell you that they are one of the best being low power consumption pumps, use it I love my old Rio and you wont beat it since its free and a really good pump.

Rio pumps are one of the most energy efficient ones you can buy. I have a Rio 26hf that pumps out 1350gph at 4ft head and uses only 100watts. The noise level is just about as quiet as other pumps too.

Another tank? Nice! I would get new pumps and keep the Rios as backups...I wouldn't trust a 20 year old pump.

Taam Rios are ok. I've run a few of them and they always seem to get noisy after about 1 yr.

Taam Rio 26 Hyper Flow - 1,350GPH @ 4' head on 100 watts (13.5GPH per watt)
Laguna Max-Flo 2900 - 1,954GPH @ 4' head on 84 watts (23.3GPH per watt)

Lagunas are much more efficient and in my experience, much quieter.
