Ok so i know you guys are going to bag hard right off the bat. But just listen. If you don't like my idea don't respond.
So i just picked up a 20g long drilled with a middle overflow and 2 returns. For the past 2 years i have had nothing but a little 10g planted tank because im living at school. but i saw this tank on craigslist for $50 and had to pick it up.

My plans for the tank are as followed.
1. I plan to build a 10g sump similar to the one pictured under the tank.(guy wanted $30 for the sump so im going to build my own)
2. Put ceramic Tile on the floor. (Looks somewhat natural) and (Filtration will pick up everything before it settles)
3. Stock List will be as followed. x6 small clown loaches, x4-6 Senegal Polys(albino and regular), 1 small Indo, 1 African Butterfly fish, and possibly a small school of tetras.

My question is do you have any suggestions as to how much turnover i should put on the tank. I have 2 quiet one pumps rated from 800-1200 id have to check the exact amount on each pump. Thats giving me about 40x turnover rate in an hour. Which unless I made some DIY returns and made a bigger return point i feel as if the tank would be a damn whirlpool.

I also have various powerheads i could use for the sump but not sure I feel comfortable using a powerhead to run a sump.

My other idea is to hard plumb my old Fx5 into the plumbing. Which would be insane. And i would again have to make DIY returns to try and slow down the current.

(I read a post last night explaining the "current" that i will attempt to explain ahead of time before some of you tell me im DUMB.) Say you take a hose with one of those restrictor nozzles on it. If you turn the nozzle down it will Shoot across your yard. but if you open it up all the way it will just flow out right infront of you. ) Same goes for if you run small returns. Will create more pressure in return causing the water to fly out of the return faster.

Sorry for this post kinda being all over the place. Really just looking for some opinions on my filtration!

Thank you!image.jpegimage2.jpegimage.jpegimage2.jpeg

Your filtration ideas all seem fine. Obviously overkill but nothing wrong with that. In regards to flow you'll get some good current where the return line is, but you won't get a "stream". A more standard filter for a 20g would just be a simple HOB like an ac110, but if you have the other stuff go for it!

I'm guessing people aren't responding because of your stock list however. That is far too small of a tank for a Senegal, when full grown they won't be able to move (even though they aren't active fish, they need some room). 5 Senegals is just a joke. Same goes for the loaches, they need a lot of room to be as active as they are. They are very very slow growers, but still not ideal. Then as if the dozen large fish in a 20 wasn't enough you are talking about adding MORE. It's a sad mentality of so many people that want their tank to look full when the fish are babies, which usually leads to dead fish when they grow up.

In summary your filtration sounds great, start from scratch on your stock plan.

And I know you said not to respond if you don't like it, but that statement is why you got zero responses.
