I only have experience keeping piranha and know that I cant keep any species of them in a 20G tank except for maybe exodons or wimple (not something I'm interested in). I'm curious if there are any other smaller predatory fish that would do fine in a 20G long tank. Either solitary or in a small group. Planning on having it moderately planted, any suggestions?

I would suggest Dwarf Puffers. I would try 4 of them. I have a pair in my planted 10 and of the 3 tanks and all my fish I own they are by far my favorites. They have a ton of personality and act like little dogs in a fish tank. I can't walk by the tank without them coming up to the glass and saying hello. They may seem all cute and friendly but as soon as snails, bloodworms, or ghost shrimp hit the tank they turn into killing machines.

Ya i've always liked tiger barbs...looking into options a little more I was actually leaning towards a pair of german blue rams and maybe a few smaller tetras with a more heavily planted set-up. I know they're not really predatory fish but the rams seem like pretty neat fish. Any input on this idea would be great.

I've got a pair of rams in my new 29 along with danios, pictus cat and zebra loaches. They are pretty looking fish but are super passive.

Ram cichlids are from South America. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water, and a water temperature around 78°F (26°C).
One aspect of their behavior that makes ram cichlids so popular is that, unlike many other cichlid species, ram cichlids are peaceful fish that can be successfully kept in a community tank. You should provide them with lots of plants and rockwork for hiding places in their tank, as well as adequate swimming room.
They are also relatively small fish, reaching a maximum size of only about 2.5 inches (6 cm) in length.
Don't keep your rams with overly aggressive fish. Good tankmates are fish that have similar water requirements, such as tetras.
Ram cichlids are omnivores eating both plant-based and meat-based foods. They will eat most aquarium fare, but try to also supplement their diet with live and frozen fish foods.
Although ram cichlids are peaceful fish most of the time, they can become territorial during spawning and fry care.

20 gallon longs make the best shellie tanks. If u like crazy ones try sp. temporalis
