I personally have a pair of Apistogramma , group of 9 Browntail Pencil fish and 4 Banjo Catfish that I rarely see lol.

How about apistogramma species? Beautiful and small enough for a 20 gallon. Tanganyikan shell dwellers are another option. The apistos like soft lower pH water, while the shellies like very hard high pH water, so you may have to adjust depending on what you have and what you get.

If you don't like cichlids, maybe a planted tank with a betta? they make quite good pets.

Or a small reef tank if you are interested in salt, 20 would be a great size to start with

Thanks guys for the feed back, tlindsey tlindsey I know what you mean about the banjo cats they are so cool looking but you never ever see them. I was looking at the apistogramma's very pretty fish. I already have one Betta tank he's in with Harlequin rasboras and a farlowella cat. I know I cant have anything super big but is there anything that gets decent sized I could use as a centre piece? A little reef tank would be awesome but the one fish I absolutely wanna have saltwater wise is a lion fish Soooooo pretty and I don't think that would fit long term

Back before my 20 high was a quarantine this was my stock
6-8 bronze cory
6 serpae tetra
6 neons

If if was me I’d go with
8 bronze cory
15 long fin serpae tetras (love the long fins version)
1 keyhole cichlid/krib/ dwarf gourami

If I went with honey gouramis I’d knock the tetras down to 12 and get 3 honey gouramis.

The keyhole/krib is questionable depending on who you ask.

I have had a 20 gallon tall running for a few years once. My stock was a german blue ram pair, upside down catfish, bristlenose pleco, 2 glass catfish, 5 black neon tetras, 2 pepper cory cats, a vittata pleco, and a breeding pair of spiketail paradise fish. This was a successful stock for me.

I know they're super common but tiger barbs are cool. A group a TB's and maybe some corys would be fun. Id even consider just a group of cory's and some peaceful top dweller
