a month or two. they slow down after 6 in. they grow about 6 in in the first year. then about 1-2 in a year after that. so not to long. but you prolly keep one in a 55 for a couple years. Blacks are very slow growers... Serrasalmus Sanchezi only get to about 6 in. you may want to think about them too.
you best bet is Sanchesiz or Irritan which is the smallest piranha. and very slow grow. 20g will be a few month...55g or 40gbreeder tank for life. IMO
