Hey folk,

Long time lurker first time poster. So I've been keeping and breeding SA and CA Cichlids for just over 30 years but I've always kept species that max out around 6ish inches or so. For years I've been wanting to keep Uaru. A's but out of all the tanks I've got up and running 90g is the largest and I've always felt that a 90 is to small for any fish that can potentially get 10"s.

So a few months ago I decided to make the jump. I purchased a group of 3 Juvenile Uaru A. and I've been growing them out in a 75g. I went ahead and purchased a 210g for them this past weekend and will move them in once it's up and running properly.

Since my years of experience are focused on smaller species of Cichlids I figured I would tap into the great minds of the fine folks at MFK's! I'm looking for recommendations for larger growing SA/CA tank mates with matching personalities to the Uarus. Now, I fully know that it often times comes down to the individual fish since we all know there are psychos of every species out there Haha. I once had an Electric Blue Acara that had to have been a serial killer in a past life! Any recommendations would be much appreciated. I know a few of the usual suspects like Severums but my knowledge of the more obscure larger growing cichlids that have a mellow disposition are limited.

I'm also looking for suggestions regarding schooling SA/CA dither fish that won't be eaten once these fish get full sized.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Welcome!
Uarus are not predatory, in fact, mainly ommnivores/vegetarians. However, like many largish fish (and certainly most cichlids), they can eat very small fish. I would suggest some of the larger tetras as a good ditter choice, something like Colombian tetras (H. columbianus), as very colorful, active, relatively inexpensive and easy to find, and who would have very interesting group behavior.
Regarding larger companions, severum comes to mind. Years ago, I had them together (that is, U. amphiacanthoides) in a tank that was quite successful. Others that come to mind are flagtail Prochilodus (which would keep your tank clean), or flag cichlids (Mesonauta).
It sounds as a very nice tank you are planning. I am sure others will have useful suggestions. Good luck!

That's some great information! It's funny, for some reason I always thought Flagtails were from Asia. I went and looked them up after reading your post and low and behold! One of the great things about this hobby is you never stop learning. Your Columbian Tetra suggestion was fantastic as well. I would have never thought of them.

I've been keeping and breeding Uaru for awhile now. I've never had one eat another fish no matter how small. I have a 220 show tank that I currently keep uaru, Oscars, Severum, Flag tails, and others. I've have Festivum with them as well in the past.

Thanks for the reply! Out of curiosity, how do your Uarus get along with your Oscar? My Uarus don't seem to have an aggressive bone in their body so I was curious how they do against a potential large bully

P.S. I've enjoyed your videos for a while. We follow each other on IG and we've exchanged comments regarding Uarus

They occasionally chase each other around for territory but that's it. They're all over 6" too. My mated pair have been fighting lately so I separated them. Only time I've ever seen aggression in a Uaru ever.
