Ok so first thread, first monster tank. Jumping from a 55 to 220, jus cause an arowana is so awesome.

Im trying to avoid a sump to filter this tank, but still looking for at least a 1000 gph turnover. i was thinking the biggest cannister i can find (530gph) and like 3 regular over the glass filters. Im just wondering if there is a bigger canister out there or an easier way without a sump, or if a sump is my only option.

Also heating, in all the vids i see one heater on each side (vertical) or two horizontal along the bottom. but it never tells you what size heaters they are so im looking to only have 2, any more seems too much and im wondering what size i need.

go easy on my wallet if you can lol

thanks!

Your going to want at least 1500 GPH. You don't need to do a sump, although there easier than you think check out "UaruJoey" on youtube; he has great DIY video's. If you wish to have different filtration, I recommend a trio of AC110's, or 1 AC110, and an Fluval FX5.

Personally im a sump person...but if u really dnt want it...get a 2 fx5's or a fx5 and and a ehiem ....srry for lack of hob I just really dnt like using them as far as heating I would say two 500watts would do or maybe 3 300 watts one ever 2ft of the tank would work...

Two FX5's will more then adiquately filter that tank with a single aro. I say single aro because the only aro that tank can house(unless upgraded) would be a jardini. They are pretty much solitary fish, maybe some bottom dwellers could work.

Ye pretty much wat he said honestly if ur doing only a aro just get 1fx5 and.ull b fine!

Generally you want 4x turnover for sumps or canisters, and 10x turnover for HOB filters. For example, if you have a canister moving 530gph with media, that will adequately filter 132 gallons. If you have a HOB moving 500 gallons per hour (see: Aquaclear 110), that will adequately filter 50 gallons. Use that formula to figure out how many filters of different types you'll need.

NEVER leave yourself with only 1 filter on the tank. In case of failure you would be screwed.

On that tank I would go with something along the lines of:
- 1 Eheim 2262
- 2 Aquaclear 110s

That would give you more than adequate filtration with filters from quality brands that have been tested to last 20+ years. That setup would also give good circulation, and keep the interior of the tank clearer of debris.

i was thinking 2 ac110s till the fish get a bit bigger then step it up... ill figure that out when i get there but im getting it as a lil baby so its not gonna be producing too much of a bio load for a good 4-6 months id say... but i was gonna do one aro with a pair of oscars and then my pleco to clean it all up since he is now outgrown my 55.

ok i have the tank now and it is drilled 1.5 inch 4 holes, one on the front bottom right, back bottom left, and 2 on the top in back... if i dont want to use a sump how would i plug those? wit like rubber stopers from the inside or i thought about putting a piece of glass or acrylic over it on the in and outside but would those peices need to be as thick as the rest of the tank or can they be smaller?

Thanks once again for all the advice... and the reason im not planing on using a sump is because its basically going to be sitting on the floor and im going to kind of build an entertainment center above it,,, no big speakers or anything so dont wory bout vibrations but jus gonna mount my tv on the wall and my x box under it (hit me up on bf3, tiller11 lol) i thought that would give my wall a nice look.
