Hey I just set up a 220 gallon central american community tank and was wondering how many central americans would be ok to stock in their. Right now i have quite a few but most are 3.5 to 4". I have 5 Vieja Syns, (two are about 5") two 3.5" amphilophus lyonsi's, two 3.5" vieja argentias, one 6" paratheraps zonatum, two 4-5" paratherap breidhori's, and two gold streak severums and lastly two 4-5" red tiger motas. I know that all these fish get very large so I basically want to know how many would be good to stock once they all get closer to adult size or would this many be ok in a 220 gallon? I hope I dont have to get rid of any because they are all showing super nice colors.
Any info would be great :headbang2

Well, you'll probably have to thin the numbers a bit. I just had to remove my super red sev from my vieja community. It wasn't aggression that was the problem, he just had too much trouble competing for food. The viejas were too active for him to do well. So first off, I would think about moving the sevs.

Down the road, aggression might force your hand into getting rid of a few more - I've never kept Zonatus, but everybody that has says they're one of the nastier vieja & with him being your largest, I'd keep an eye on him. I've found conspecific aggression in lyonsi to be very high. I couldn't keep four juvies in a 90gal even at 1.5in. 5 syns is a little bit of overkill. I'd look into rehoming 2-3.

But you're ok for a long time - probably a year at least, unless they get too agressive. Once they put on size, keep an eye on your water params & let them dictate how many fish you keep.

ok sweet. ya i was planning on getting rid of a few synspilums once they got bigger in the next year, i just want to wait and see which ones turn out the best. and maybe i will put the severums back in my 75 gallon discus tank. I had them in their before and they worked really well with the discus and grew really healthy in there since i do so many water changes in that tank. my only concern with that is that i have i think 6 red head tapajos in there so space will become a problem down the road especially with 7 discus in there. I will post pics of my tank soon.

Wouldnt hurt to try the sevs in there. Your setup might work better than mine did. Your tank is bigger - mine is a 150. You have more room to spread food out.
