I am picking up a new (to me) 220gal tank with filters and all gizmos imaginable about mid february. :headbang2

It is coming as a fully functional Saltwater tank, with over 200lbs of live rock with the best bacteria and life (practically purple), as well as a few clown fish and cleaner shrimp... not to mention all the cycled salt water he is sending me home with in 59gal barrels.

The filter has been cycled and is rich with all of the bacteria needed to sustain a healthy tank..

I am not sure if I want a salt water tank... this is my issue.

Would it be stupid to clean all that bacteria out and sell the live rock and just turn it into a massive freshwater tank?? :screwy:

Or should I keep the salt water stuff and get a shark or some other cool predatory salt water fish?

What sounds like a better Idea? :nilly:

i would say keep it saltwater because your gonna have everything you need to sustain a really nice saltwater tank. and mayb go with the shark idea or just put some nice colorful fish.

Have you ever had a saltwater tank before? Do you know what is involved in maintaining one? What's your budget?

Yea I know its spendy. That could be a good reason why I should just keep it running the way it is. Then I don't have to spend the money later if I want to start a SW tank then. I know its a pain, my grandparents had one and I have been dreaming of one since... I just really got into my freshwater fish and want to keep them. I suppose at this point its really 50-50... I still have a few weeks to decide. I will post pics when it is up and running. :)

I have asked a lot of ppl and I think that it would be a waste to get rid of all the beneficial bacteria already in the rock and filters.

not a waste if you cant afford it....

Nah, I can afford it. Thats not the issue. I am just afraid of not loving it. But I suppose I can always try it out, and if I decide I dislike it I will sell all of the saltwater equipment and start over with fresh. Thats a good idea I think... I should have thought of that from the beginning. lol.

Thanks guys...:nilly:

You said your getting it in february. Why don't you setup maybe a 20g saltwater to see if you like it? If you decide against it, you could make a good amount of money selling the liverock and use that money for sweet freshwater fish.

after having both saltwater and freshwater I would say go with the salt. That would be a great tank for a lion fish and a toad fish IMO.

If you make it a saltwater predator make sure you take out the clowns and shrimp.

depends what predators and the sizes of the fish. And how much hiding spots there are. He did say that it comes with a lot of rocks. And how hungry the fish get.

But there is always the chance.

I had a clown and some damsels with my lion fish and never had a problem.
