Well I recently acquired a 220gal at a decent price and will soon start the build process. right now I am trying to decide if I want to go with a sump or two Eheim 2262's. The tank is not drilled at this time. I have been studying it and don't think it will be a problem to drill it. My first thoughts were to buy two overflows from glass cages and drill the bottom for 2 inch drains. Believe that will turn over abut 2900gph I have watched some videos on You Tube and read a ton on the subject. My only concern is that I can't find a video or where some one has drilled the bottom.

I don't want to have them on the back as I think t looks much cleaner to have tem draining out the bottom. The glass on the bottom is no tempered so I don't think I will have issues drilling it. Just wondering if anyone has drilled the bottom of a tank before and has some recommendations or lessons learned.

For my sump I plan to use a 75gal glass aquarium.

also recommendations, thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Thanks

I've never done it myself, but if you have a manufacturer's sticker on the tank you should be able to look up if you have tempered glass on the bottom which is typical of almost all tanks. Most tempered bottoms have the sticker too "TEMPERED GLASS DO NOT DRILL". If it is tempered, you can't drill it period so you're left with what you are now of overflow or eheims.

The choices on what is the better filtration, well. In my opinion, that's still debated. What we do all know is that a 10x turnover rate is preferred but not required. So that a sump is easier to get to that rate. I'm not going into canisters vs sump because I'm biased and I know it lol.

For big tank, sump system is the way to go for ease of maintenance and powerful filtration. Canisters aren't the same as they provide less powerful filtration and zero aeration. Canisters are only good because they are simple to set up, but the trade off is that they are tedious to clean in long term maintenance.

Thanks for the replies. I know I want the sump. I have checked the glass with polarized glasses and 3D glasses and using those methods it does not appear to be tempered. Just no way of being 100% sure. Guess my major issue now is drill the bottom (which iis my preference ) or drill the back wall and go with the 3000/2 overflows made by glass holes. I Have seen the video from glass holes and there are many You tube videos of people using them so that seems to be the preferred method. Just wondering how much noise they make.

Looking for input from those that have used them and thoughts and suggestions from others on this topic.
