Was cleaning my 2217 today and when I turned the motor over to access the impeller I heard a noise that I can best describe as a ball bearing rolling around in the motor housing. Filter works fine, for now at least, but I don't have a clue as to what could be rolling around. I thought the only thing in the housing was the motor windings, any guesses?

Check the impeller shaft. I broke the impeller shaft in one of my 2217s and it makes a sound similar to what you described, it still works fine but just makes a noise. I didn't want to pay the ridiculous price for eheim parts so I'm just letting it be

Everything looked fine when I cleaned the impeller and it made the noise with the impeller and shaft removed.

That is an odd sound for that filter model, I have a 2217 that had a rattle sound in the pump head when I cleaned it. I removed the pump cover carefully and found a small plastic piece underneath.

I don't remember if there is a small clamp and screw that secures the wiring under the pump cover, if so, it's possible something has come loose. The only user replaceable part under the pump cover is the o-ring on the molded output fitting.

A screw would fit the sound. Since it's silent when running I am not in a hurry to open it and find out.

I don't see how it could make any noise without the impeller in. There is literally no other moving part. Even if there was a screw or something in the housing nothing else moves nor vibrates without the impeller present. Possible something magnetized is in the housing?
